Actually, there are speedruns of this game that only take about 15-20 minutes. It seems fun, but I've not picked it up. The temptation is there.

I played Blood Dragon on the hardest difficulty available, it was still pretty easy. As far as I can tell, they are not meant to be hard. They're meant to be "I AM A GOD" fun. Molotovs et al are fun :p

What really annoys me is that automake and friends will correctly build your software on systems from like 15 years ago and more that nobody ever uses. Those things have way too much backwards compatibility. Do you ever check the scripts? They check how sane the C compiler is by compiling hello world. It's super annoying. Somewhere out there, there is the perfect build system. It might be D's. It might be ninja.

m4 is really unpleasant to use, but if a project uses GNU autotools, then it uses m4. the autotools themselves are awful.

I recently bought a Ducky keyboard for work, Cherry Browns as well. Surprisingly difficult to find any Ducky keyboards in the UK at the moment, particularly the browns! Do you mean one of the split style keyboards? I'm not sure I could ever use one of them. I know a couple of people that do, though.

Halo speedrun was super legit. I might have said this in this thread already. The HL2 one was good fun, there was stuff in there I don't remember seeing in the segmented run I saw a while back, was very cool how much he explained. Portal race was... eh. I didn't like it. Similarly the Portal 2 run was really impressive, but not quite as hype. Not sure why.

Combination of technology, drivers and Linux. Wireless speeds only go up to about 24 Mbits, unless you are on wireless N - that can go faster. I know this because my flatmate tested and got 100 +, but I'd like to try it myself (with a somewhat newer PC, though I am quite certain it won't make a difference).

I tried it on my laptop, I got 20/11. This is basically due to the fact that the wireless drivers on my laptop limit it to 20 downstream. When I get my desktop in, I'll let you know.

I have no such device. My parents won a Wii in a raffle though, I really should actually try to play the Pikmin games at some point. As an Xbox-owning scrub, I had Overlord, now that I'm on PC I have none (though I should probably just load Pikmin up on Dolphin emulator).

It's pretty simple, same as the last time you asked. You have an expression for each of the vectors, dot them together. You will find that you have four terms in the expansion because it's the FOIL rule (as you might have been taught). You know, (x + y)(x - y) = x^2 + xy - xy - y^2. It's the antisymmetric one. So you get that, do some simplification, and it could be that it comes out to zero. If you remember that any two vectors whose dot product is zero are orthogonal to each other, well, you've solved it!

Basically, #include <header.h> will look in standard OS locations for header files. Like, I dunno, gcc's install directory, Visual Studio's defined header locations, whatever. It will also look in the locations you pass to the compiler, probably with a flag like -I"../path/to/hedders". This is why the compiler can't find it.

You actually want #include "header.h", which will look in the current directory (or as superjer notes you can pass a relative path in there, if that's what turns you on).

So to clarify: #include "BlackThornDemon.h". What kind of header file has that name anyway? :s

There's more, you probably want #include <Arduino.h> but that seems to be working regardless, also you will need #include "../BlackThornDemon.h", just like superjer said. When it tells you it can't find the file, there's a reason. It's because it's not where it's looking! And I tend to trust the computer when it says it can't find it.

Not getting it is fine. The concept of a minimum temperature is a quantum effect, somewhat to do with the fact that a particle with zero temperature would have zero energy which would imply several things, all of which are infinite. We don't like infinite, as a general rule.

The CMBR has a temperature, it's about 3K. I think. That is not what Aaronjer is talking about. (Also, re: /sarcasm: I misinterpreted )

Fun fact! The hottest and coldest places in our solar system exist on none other than our planet! That's cool. Also, the average density of the universe is approximately one hydrogen atom per cubic meter, which is to say some 10^24 less dense than air at STP. You can safely conclude, therefore, that anybody you meet is a statistical anomaly.

Aaronjer, you might want to look at the Michelson-Morely experiment, it is very interesting. As regards a variable speed of light... there is a theory which suggests that actually mid sentence I have decided I am thinking of the wrong thing. Never mind!

zjamz: the experiment came first, kind of. A similar one did anyway. This necessitated new theory, not the other way around. The experimental result is all the proof you need that it happens, because, well, it does. This isn't the same as saying that the experiment proves the theory, because it only does not disprove it; however given the large body of experimental evidence so far acquired for QM it is held as accurate and correct by the vast majority of scientists. It is as accurate and precise as a measurement of the distance from New Yoik to London differing from the "true" value by the width of a human hair.


This final edit is somewhat my own opinion, but whatever.
It doesn't really matter, in the end, what is "really happening" in these experiments. All we can do is experiment -> measurement -> theory -> test -> refine, endlessly. There is a theory in which you can treat sound moving through solids as a particle, called a phonon. Now, we know that it ain't true. It's atoms vibrating. But it doesn't mean that this phonon cannot have a mass, a velocity, energy, and so on. And using this phonon theory you can predict very well the movement of sound through a solid. The model works - that is all we can ask of it. Anyways, as I said that's the way I see things. I've actually pretty much stopped doing science now, I graduated last summer and have moved onto a postgrad in high performance computing instead, so my thoughts are not necessarily the most coherent, accurate or indeed correct.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting, but what I meant is that experiment is the ultimate arbiter. You experiment, you make a theory that explains the experiment, maybe it makes a prediction you can test. Great. Anything else is masturbation. Saying that the experiment was an attempt at proof... well, it is what happens. Explaining it is the tricky bit.

At the moment, we are sort of in the "prediction" stage. Though it is expected, or rather hoped, that this will change soon. Say the next 20 years.

Also I have a bit of a problem with the universe, it has chosen some really shitty constraints. Like a speed limit that is not on the same scale as the distance scales of the universe, what the hell physics. Same with Planck's constant: 0 would be great, or a big number would be cool too. Turns out it's just really small. BO-RING.

That's all models are. Models. You can discuss what might "really" be happening, but when it comes down to it you have a model and an experiment. If the model predicts the outcome of the experiment, what else can you do?

That said, various folks have suggested ideas for what might be "actually happening" (a phrase I am not entirely comfortable with). You might be interested in the Many Worlds interpretation, the Copenhagen interpretation, Feynman's sum-over-histories interpretation... There are lots. Quantum mechanics is only concerned with the fact that things like subatomic particles electrons and protons etc. are not necessarily waves, nor are they necessarily particles. They can appear to have some of the properties of both, depending on how you observe them, but ultimately they are neither.

They key point in all this is that the double-slit experiment is weird if you think an electron (or indeed a photon) is a particle. If you assume it's a wave, whatever that might mean, there's no problem! Of course if you then go do a different experiment involving gold foil and a monochromatic source of light (the Photoelectric Effect) then you have to assume that photons are actually particles. As I said, it's weird if you assume they are one or the other. Thinking of it as some third thing with properties of both is better.

It's true. I ended up accidentally sexing Liara in Mass Effect, because I was trying to romance Kaidan but... This is coming out wrong. I was talking to Liara about how her species does shaggin' because I was playing my Shepard as "interested in everything" type, like science and things, but apparently Liara took it the wrong way and got a bit hot... anyway, next time I talked to Kaidan (literally went from one conversation to the next) he refused to talk to me about the romance-dance because I'd talked to Liara about it.

Long story short, the guy has blatantly bugged my clothes and was listening to my conversations.

Also my post sounds like I didn't read yours but I did, you have many valid points. I guess it's a symptom of making things game-y. Like, getting players to form relationships with NPCs involves having them spend time together, spending time implies doing things, doing things is basically large-scale murder, so you get the situation as is. Kind of. That's not to say it shouldn't change, I'd love to see a first person game where the most significant decision you make is firing a gun.

You are making maps for a game which is now very old. The technology back then was not as capable. Not only are these old tools, they are old buggy tools. You're going to have issues. Also, follow the rules and you'll be mostly fine. Or map for a game which was released in the last 5 years.

Having reread your post in a similar late-night frame of mind, I'd have to say I think I was going for the attention to detail thing. Which is pretty cool, to be honest. I'm not sure I can actually think of any decent relationship examples in games, beyond the standard "but Bioware" comment. Though their solution essentially amounts to you talking to the person/object of interest until they submit.

Maybe it is time for something new.

I confess that I have not looked at a lot to do with Windows 8. I had no interest in buying it as Windows 7 works fine for my desktop and I went full Linux on my laptop when I bought an SSD at Christmas. I installed Arch onto a flash drive this afternoon too so I can Linux on my desktop without partitioning. That and, you know, carrying a Linux install with you anywhere is pretty cool.

Essentially, from what I can see, everyone thinks it is too tablet-y. Is this a legitimate concern? I don't know, not having used it, but I know that my phone's interface by-and-large annoys me. I can't see that taking principles from small, touch-screen devices massively excites me.

Hall of traps? Oh, you should make the minecart shotgun! Messy, effective, hilarious. Like all good Dwarf Fortress contraptions. I don't really get the underlying mechanics of it, but it involves launching minecarts filled with heavy things (like gold bars) and sharp things (like swords and axes and what-have-you) at a low wall at high speed. Minecart hits wall, objects in minecart fly down long, specially-built tunnel ideally containing goblins. Reload, reset, wash away the manky bits, try again!

FORTRAN is actually case insensitive, so you can call it FoRtRaN if you so please. Its IO is one of the most horrific things I have ever undertaken. It is physically painful. If you call a file .f and not .f90 then every line must start with 6 spaces or the character 'c' indicating that it is a comment. The parser is retarded. To work out the dependencies of a file, the compiler must look at the .mod file associated with a module. The .mod file is not created until you compile. But what if you don't want to compile until you know the dependencies? Tough!

They have attempted to make it backwards compatible so there have been no far-ranging and indeed really necessary changes to the language. Really, they should make a Fortran where all previous nonsense is ignored, swept under the carpet, whatever.

Everything is passed by reference, but there are no proper pointers. There are both subroutines and functions. Functions can return values, subroutines cannot. Functions can be pure, meaning they have no side effects, but they don't have to be.

This is possibly the most retarded, pants-on-head, why did you not CHANGE THIS CHRIST ALMIGHTY feature: unless you have a line at the top of your source file saying "implicit none", Fortran will assume any identifier you have not declared is a valid variable. Yes. If it starts with [ijklmn] it's of type integer, otherwise real. The only way in modern Fortran to discern between float and double is to say real(kind(some_variable)).

The reason I'm doing Fortran right now is because I am doing a Masters in High Performance Computing. It's pretty cool, we're learning GPU programming at the moment in one of the lectures (the Portland Group actually make a Fortran-CUDA compiler). I spend my time writing shitty parallel code and running said code on the 32nd largest computer in the world :D

Mostly for the past few weeks I've been doing variants of C and C libraries with a considerable amount of Fortran thrown in there for fun.

The example I was directly referencing was some teaching code for a course I did a couple of years ago - the code was for solving gravitational interactions for a few bodies in 2d in quite a nice general manner. The reason a setter was used was to make sure that when the (x,y) pair was changed anything that listened for it would know, in particular the canvas that was displaying this motion.

This makes it easy to add additional functionality, for example a logging system, because pretty much all you need to do is add it to the list of listeners.

I appreciate that it's often applied with little thought, in the best case your encapsulation should be strong enough that you don't have getters and setters for member variable because nobody needs to see them.

Much as supes is right with version control, I'm not sure that's the question you're asking. Version control is a way of creating a history for your software which reflects the total sum of changes made over its life. It is very useful. (Use mercurial)

As an addendum, I still disagree about the logging stuff. For instance, you can use a setter to make sure that all changes to a variable notify an event listener, if that's what you're into.

Yes, dicking around with the CLASSPATH variable will do it. You could also make a "release" version of your classes, and place them in something like ~/Java/, but that's a tad extreme. Better just to add to your CLASSPATH such that you also include the root directory of your classes. You can also pass both the compiler and the runtime a switch like -cp IIRC which will change the path for that compilation.

I've been drinking, please complain if that doesn't make sense.

As well as ints there are bytes and shorts. Bytes are one byte, funnily, and shorts are two. Logically they will behave like this. Sadly, internally in most JVMs that I know of, they are stored like ints, so you do not gain anything from storing them as such. If I were going to do something involving the bit representation and so on, I'd use C or C++.

So you've resparked my interest (at 3 am, you bas), and I'm not sure I'll ever get the answer. Because: can't change i--; one change is a solution and anything else is not an operator. Can't change the assignment, that's a two-character change. Can't change the assignment of i to anything useful (largest is 9). Can't change the type of loop (obviously). Can't change the loop boundaries (not that I think it would help). Can't change the thing it's printing to anything useful.

Legit, you made me break out the pens. I want to say that changing the < to & will work, but it might actually print out 19 or 21 minus signs, I think. It's late! We want the pattern

C++ comes with a marginal overhead. Technically anything I've written in C is also valid C++, I'd imagine, because I've not used anything very funky, it's more that I don't really know the syntax for classes in C++ and I am not so hot on class constructors and destructors. In fact, it is a little project of mine to become more familiar with this over the summer, by rewriting that Perlin noise program I have. I will then make a little Python script to run it because Python is lovely :)

Ummm, I think x = x++ is valid, I'd need to check the spec but I don't see why it shouldn't be unambiguous. C recognises the whitespace. As to what x is... Technically it can return anything. It could just crash and that is completely allowed. However, using gcc, I think you would get 13. The reason why is quite subtle and is essentially because no code will be produced for that fragment (it will just end up as a numeric literal, gcc will do the maths for you).

That would be something like fixed point, though a better way to do it is to store for example 2 bytes of integer part and 2 bytes of fractional part. Or four of each, go crazy. You can actually implement this yourself if you feel up to it! Yeah, VB is stupid. I admit that initially using the thing that had meant exponentiation to be something different wasn't the best plan, but we're stuck with it now.

Yeah, you're missing the point of the operator. It's not the exponent, but the XOR as I said. Generally exponents are either ** or just a function call (Math.pow()) for example). Pretty crazy how it works though!

Rockbomb is right, a^=b is equivalent to a = a^b. As Sprinkles edited in, that is a bitwise XOR. So if we have binary numbers a = 0101 and b = 1100, a ^ b = 1001. Do you see what's going on? Basically it does an XOR (exclusive or) operation against the individual bits of the number. XOR returns true if the two operands are different ( 0 XOR 0 = 0, 1 XOR 0 = 1, etc.)

So given that can you tell me what this does?

There's a massive difference in size. If you want proof, try it using my pictures from the "noise" thread. My point about MPEGs is that they use many of the same ideas and algorithms as JPEGs do. Broadly, certain key frames are encoded with JPEG, then the changes between successive frames are tracked. Honestly though, JPEGs have the bestest compression ratios for "complex" images. The tricky bit is defining complex, of course.

Pictures. The difference at anything above 85% quality is essentially unnoticeable. It can be instructive to take a high-quality lossless image then JPEG it and look at the difference between the two images. There's a slight afterimage, but really not much. It's a hugely clever algorithm too.

See the problem is, you can't use lossless everywhere. Eventually you will find a file that increases when "compressed".

I was going to screenshot this thread and rotate it then post the image, but that's more work than telling you to read the file into an array then index the bits you need and put that into a second array (because it is not an in-place transform).

I used pgm because it is braindead-simple. They look like this:

Well yes, I get that. It's more... how do I structure my program intelligently such that I can use a file to configure the program? I've done quite a bit of file IO in Java, and a small amount in C. But I always feel that saying something along the lines of "look for parameter -> save into variable -> find code path" is a bit... inefficient. And I always seem to find that either lots of code is duplicated or there are if statements EVERYWHERE. And that is definitely inefficient.

Found it. Of course it was a p that should be q. So you get this now:

Interestingly, this image is actually larger when compressed using PNG. I mean it might be the program I used, but perhaps I have finally found my pathologic image! Of course as we know for any given lossless compression format there will always be some sequence of bytes that is larger when "compressed" by that format. So maybe I've found one of them.

This is what happened when I added the second domain warping:

As you can see it's not working here, there is far too much random noise. Compare with the stuff going on in this page.

It's also going to need optimisation soon. It's a little slow. There's a really easy one, that being to cache the vectors generated at each grid point. At the moment they're recomputed each pixel and they involve a call to a fairly complex function and quite a bit of trigonometry. So that really ought to help, I hope. When I can be bothered/have time.

I compile with -pedantic and -Wall and it's still fine! You'll notice that, at the moment, there's a fairly severe bias toward vertical lines - I am not sure why. But I have one idea; it might be related to the noise function I use (repeatedly, which I think is the issue). I'm bust right now but I'm going to do a little this evening, see if I can't do some function pointer magic to change which type of fbm is produced.

It's probably about time I let someone see my code. So here it is: GET SOME

At the moment, it is nothing more than a simple command-line program to produce Perlin noise and FBM of various octaves. It's all pretty simple but is completely uncommented. You run it like

The images are all square, so that's what size is, the cellsize defines what scale the noise is on, larger cellsizes make large noise features, smaller makes it more intricate. The octaves thing... broadly speaking, adding more octaves (you can leave it at zero for instance) will add higher-frequency noise but at a smaller amplitude. At the moment that's not hugely modifiable.

I've just realised what I've said is lies. I've added some domain warping and at the moment, it can't be turned off. The plan for the next bit is to add support for a file that all the data is read from, because there are only so many pieces of data you can put on the command line. If you want to remove the domain warping it will require a little source editing. If anyone is really interested I'll tell you what to do. Expect pictures in the next few days, perhaps!

I don't know the names of the theories, sorry. There is a branch of physics known as String Theory. It's quite clever and has its roots in some really beautiful ideas but sadly is not fully understood; in fact, it is far from it. But one idea that came from this is that two universes - 'branes' in the theory - collide along some 5th axis; we perceive this as the big bang. It's pretty crazy. There is of course eternal big bang theory, where the universe expands up to a point, but there's too much matter so it begins to contract and then there is a big crunch. Physicists hypothesise this could lead to a big bounce where it happens all over again. Currently the universe is expanding at an increasing rate, so this seems highly unlikely.

This might be where I get off on the US politics side of things. I'm clearly out of my depth though I will admit you have made me rethink the Obama administration, as well as the possibility of a Ron Paul ticket. I think he's probably their best candidate. But that's not saying much sadly :(

SRAW: the Iran point is an interesting one. Ahmadinejad is clearly a nutter, but the country's changed so much in the past 40 years, it's insane. There's a lot wrong in that area of the world, but I'm not sure how it can be fixed :(

You say the big bang is an assumption... it isn't. When you look at the universe, everything is moving away from everything else. Everything is expanding. So if you wind that backwards, you arrive at the idea that everything was once completely compressed and expanded from there. There's a competing "steady state" theory, now known as "quasi-steady state", but it has been discredited repeatedly. Rather than its predictions being verified, the theory has had to be modified to accommodate observation. Also note that the theory says nothing of what happened *before* the BB. In fact, the theory claims there is no before; there is merely some t = 0 at which point things kick off; likewise there is no "outside", this was not an explosion in space but an explosion of space. Your thoughts above in the thread about there being some kind of being, and about our current theories being wrong... I suggest you research them some more. Clearly lots of work needs to be done but a key point to remember is that our current theories make predictions, predictions which have been experimentally verified. Any theory that superseded the ones we have currently would have to make the same predictions to explain that which we currently observe.

I am also intrigued by your other comment, about some sort of higher being. What would this thing be? Why do you feel there should be something like that out there? Why, in fact, assume at the moment? Do you believe it's a creator of some sort? Anyway, answer as much or as little as you feel like, I am interested.

Right, consider this. There are many world religions. Hundreds. Each of them has some kind of creation myth which we know about from the supposed holy texts of that religion. They make contrasting claims, but all we have to choose between them is basically personal choice. There is nothing in the world that says one religion is better than the other.

On the other hand, current scientific theories about the evolution of the universe are the result of centuries of observation, theory and measurement. They are entirely derivable from the world around us and require no ancient texts or superstition. Religion is stupid. Think about it! The Bible is largely ~1800-~1900 years old. How, in any way, can you apply this to modern life?! Go back a mere 500 years and you cannot apply their theories to the modern world. This is not a surprise.

To finish this bit, I was raised a christian. I can ask why I was raised a christian, and it wasn't because of divine will, it was because my parents are of that denomination. Were I born elsewhere - say, India - I would likely be hindi, perhaps muslim. What is the difference between these scenarios? Nothing.

To add a final bit to the Ron Paul thing, creationism denies evolution. This is stupid and I should not have to tell you why. The problem is in education, people attempt to push their bullshit into the classroom where it does not belong.

I read quite a lot of athiest shit on the internet, you know, and I guess it's not great to spend so much time circlejerking. But in America things seem to be so much worse... though, when David Cameron starts saying that the decline of christianity in Britain is to blame for the current decline of society, I start getting worried. SERIOUSLY, don't read this if you ever plan to read the book. Iain M. Banks is a bit of a hero.

So I read this on holiday recently, it's great. Science fiction but I think the concept could transfer to some huge fantasy world.

In this book a huge amount of plot happens. There's some big space war going on and there is one mercenary type person caught in the middle of the two factions. He is sent on a mission to obtain an AI for one faction; this AI belongs to their enemies. He goes through an immense amount of shit to get to it but in the end, on a galactic scale, his impact is essentially negligible. The war ends with him having had no say in the outcome. But it's really interesting to have a really different view on this, so much happens but as I say it doesn't matter, in a sense. It really got me thinking anyway and I do so love it when games make me think.

Well, effectively the latter part of the game is you preparing to murderise the actual villain. When it comes to the time for the confrontation the guy gives you the option of immortality, to be worshipped as a hero of the Empire for all eternity. If you choose this he's happy and makes you into a giant statue.

It's a false ending, really, because you haven't completed the main task you were supposed to be doing. I really need to replay JE, it's great.

I'm also the kind of player who sees challenges like that and says "that's for me!" even if it's really not. But I do like the idea of the player being forced into situations - and decisions - that, ideally, they'd not take, but things are far from ideal.

I also forgot about one of the endings of JE. There were the standard good/bad endings but also the one where you are transformed into a giant gold statue to be revered for all time. Good/bad/greedy bastard!

This actually sounds interesting. Well done. There have been discussions I've seen about games where the evil path is easier in a way with the good being more difficult. I think some of KotOR might be like that... also Bioshock, but that kind of fails because overall you end up with more Adam when doing the good route. Then man of the rest of them have the three way split of Irritating Paragon of Justice, Nice Hair and Being Nice to Mums; Psychopath Who Does Bad Things Because, Well, Why Not and finally the one that's basically OK but really likes money.

(This is basically how I characterised Jade Empire. Though, in fairness, mostly the bad actions available to you were those that benefited you personally. They had their split as Closed Fist/Open Palm.)

Hairy muff. They've actually changed it in the recent versions of Firefox, effectively when you type something in the bar it always searches rather than taking you to the most probable result. Infuriating! Particularly as they did it silently. I thought it was some kind of regression.

I have to say, I am not at all on board with the way FF is actually going. Chrome ain't much better though, I mean, with Firefox I can fix, customise and "addon", but Chrome is much tougher in that respect.

If it happens again, in about:config there is a value called keyword.url or similar. That is what tells Firefox to search Google, or indeed any engine of your choice.

Additionally, due to an overzealous copy() method, all the masses of the objects in the system were being set to zero after one iteration, so everything traveled in straight lines. Works now like a peach!

I found the problem. I was not scaling the first k from RK4 by h which meant that it was taking giant steps, and was very inaccurate. I seem to remember there was some other problem... regardless I am now experiencing a severe cold which is bloody annoying. :(

No wait! It was far, far worse than that. I have gone down the route of having two vectors, one for position and one for velocity, and in my "set" method I accidentally set the velocity to the position, which is why it didn't make any kind of sense. MY BAD.

Yes, it would imply that something is going horribly wrong, the current setup is a thing called derivative() which provides the gradient of the system as a whole, if you like. Strong chance that the mistake could be there tbh. The function that does the integrating makes repeated calls to this because that's how the RK4 algorithm works. I've thought of a way to test that bit, actually, by making sure that for a simple system the derivative calculation is correct. It's definitely going very weird somewhere.

And yeah I meant to say, for the very simple system it flies off in a direction that it has no velocity component in, if you see what I mean.

It looks like it might be a partial rewrite, to be honest. It's supposed to solve the motion of the planets in the solar system, at the moment as far as I can tell all it does is send everything flying off in completely straight lines. To me, it makes no sense, but I shall investigate more. It's not like I don't know the maths, I've done it before, but I've never written a program this size in C. It's getting rather complex and I am a little worried.

Of course there is also the question of do I get help from the internets, it is somewhat part of my Senior Honours project. If after the weekend no progress has been made I'll start posting snippets, but for the moment I'll sulk. I've no idea where it's going wrong.

The reason the entity changed when you deleted the offending one is because it gives you the name of the first one it "reached"; it's a little complicated but it will find one entity then stop. Well I believe notch uses a perlin noise function which requires some sequence of random numbers to generate the terrain. I don't think they were special cases, I'm willing to accept them as coincidences.

Oops, my bracketing was wrong. big_number should be really large and the whole expression should be modded. It's called a modular linear congruential generator if you want to look it up. I even have some code that I might be bothered to look up.

One of the simplest ways to generate random numbers is to say

This will generate a sequence of numbers when you make repeated calls to it (if you put it in a function, say). The choice of initial number obviously can have great effect on where the series goes, so if you allow the user to change that then you can have great variation for free! And actually an easy way for people to share maps without the associated memory/bandwidth costs. The difficulty lies in finding a good one.

i5 is nice. i7 is *very* nice but as you spotted very expensive. I have an ATi 4500 series card and an Intel processor of some sort... 2 GHz something or other. I can run most games. However, it doesn't run them very well any more! So if you can get anything from the 5000 series of ATi then you ought to be OK. I don't really know what stuff nVidia have for mobility, I only know about their most recent desktop cards.

So yes, i5 would be absolutely fine :)

Oh, I get you now. Kind of. First of all I would stay away from spaces and other funny characters in program names. It looks like you have it done correctly, but I always get paranoid anyway. It's funny, I was almost tempted to use the Apache Commons stuff for command-line argument processing, but I never had the time. Boost has one for C I think. Not that would be massively useful in this case...

Well, in the case of "./rpn 3 5 +" there are four arguments, the zeroth being the program name and then your two numbers then the plus. You can just refer to them as argv[j] then use atoi on them, or something. There's probably a way to reason about how many numbers compared to how many operators you have. Or something similar.

Your C looks quite old to me. But what do I know (answer: not much C). Ternary operators are kind of OK so long as you're careful. As for passing the arguments, you might have to do it like -O3 for optimisation level 3 for instance. Some programs do it like that, others don't. It depends but generally speaking --help will get you the syntax.

Unless you mean how do you pass numbers to *your* program, in which case you do it just by writing the numbers in, separated by spaces. The console just passes your program exactly what the end user types. Well, separated into strings, but you get what I mean.

Saying "it cannot be" without checking is the kind of... let's just say I've responded to someone's post with a possible solution, one page later it turned out that when they tried the thing I suggested it worked. Basically, try compiling and look at your memory usage. If you're on 32-bit Windows there is a maximum of 2 GB available to any one process. So check task manager while it's running.

Otherwise... sometimes bad map geometry will cause Bad Stuff (tm) to happen, so watch out for that (check for problems as mentioned by the duck).

Pretty certain I had a lucid dream this morning! I was kind of tired, I had woken up already but I fell asleep for maybe half an hour. Anyway, to the dream!

The first bit I can remember from was me sitting in something quite a lot like our student union. This was in fact what I supposed it to be at the time. I can't remember why I was there or much of what happened before (likely nothing, it's possible I 'arrived' there) but within a minute or two some people came and sat at the table. One of the guys was someone I know (but haven't seen for a while), I said "Hi Torrance" for that is his name and he said "What?" This was entirely reasonable as he was no longer who I had initially thought him to be. Considering this to be entirely reasonable, I decided to get up and go. On the way out the same thing happened with someone else - at this stage I still didn't realise I was dreaming. However, as I was leaving this place, I noticed an A4 sheet of paper on the door. The door was like the big heavy doors to tenement closes in Scottish cities. Before it closed a man I can only describe as "muslim" ran into the building, I thought I should maybe leave at this stage, because apparently dream-me is racist.

The point is, I was going to look at the A4 page again (which I had guessed was a list of names of people who live in the building, you get them often outside of flats where the occupants change year-on-year) but I didn't bother because... I was in a dream, so I'm not going to be able to read it. Then I was like HOLY SHIT and ran out into the street. It was nighttime, maybe 21:00, in a place that looked a lot like Glasgow. Or was somehow Glasgow-ish. I tried to fly, managed to get a couple of feet up then hovered and fell back down slowly. I then distinctly remember thinking "I need to find a bar!" then I woke up. Mental.

Yeah, you might be running the wrong command, I would instead try instantiating the LauncherFrame (which is from the Minecraft beta released recently). That's possibly why it didn't do anything.

In terms of the game running on other hardware, my flatmate tried it on an Intel card and it wasn't amazing. There are a few tricks to get it nicer, but I dunno.

However, you really have to have the proper drivers available (if you have an ATi or nVidia card in there, you can get open-source Intel drivers from... somewhere). Then running minecraft is as simple as running

It's the same as many languages. Think about what if(true) or if(false) might mean - basically, that is the end comparison that is made. Say you have

Besides, popularity, as SJ says, is a poor measure of... many things. If I went to tell most people that it is possible to decompose a sphere into two identical spheres the same size as the first one they likely would not believe me, but that doesn't stop it being right.

Now, fair enough there's not that great a comparison between abstract obscure mathematics and music (despite many mathematicians talking about the creative side of proof writing) but I feel that my point still somewhat stands. So much music today is mass-produced, design by committee; think of the kind of stuff that is squirted out of The X-Factor or something like Justin Bieber. My problem is that most mainstream music from nowadays strongly conforms to this pattern, be it rap or hip-hop or pop or god knows what. Or bland teenage soft rock.

All this and the fact that I totally disagree with the idea of music that is marketed towards a particular audience. I'd much rather artists made music that they wanted to make, without giving too much of a damn about who listened. Though I think that's a very small percentage nowadays.

Well, when you do myClass thingy = new myClass(), in C++ (as an example) you might do so with a pointer to thingy, rather than thingy itself. myClass might be really heavy on memory so it is better to move a pointer around and leave the class on the heap than it is to "directly" use the class.

Well, we know SuperJer already has a large list of words that he uses in the Headline Generator (which is fantastic by the way), so I assume he's tweaked it such that "ordinary" phrases don't really turn up. I've done a bit of work on grammars, it should be possible, I think. If you decompose the thing you are searching for into some number, jam that into your sentence-generator, you get consistent results but few (no?) collisions.

It's true, the very high end 5970 cards were really expensive not that long ago. They're still quite expensive. Intel Gulftown processors - the 6-core sexy beasts - cost $1000, I think, if not more. For Christmas my mum and I decided that the thing to do would be to buy a Kinect as I already had an Xbox, so we did. For starters, you're copying too much stuff. You don't need the line that says "Without Steam" and the bits at the end (that is, everything after "C:\Half-Life\" whatever it is. Secondly, as the tutorial says, you need to change the filetype from "text files" to "all files" next to the box where you put the name of the file.

This is becoming my most-hated feature of Windows.

It would be instructive to look at your setup and one that is the same except with the magnets removed. The balance of forces will be the same (as Edan said, zero).

And, of course, if you used it to induct a current it would slow down. It's odd but you can view it as a kind of friction: the electrons individually can be pushed around but when there's lots it can be a surprising force. If you have a hand generator you can feel the difference by hooking up lights of different wattages.

If you allocate more memory than RAM then large amounts of data start getting written to and read from your HDD. This actually happens all the time, however, mostly these "pages" are swapped around without the user noticing because the OS moves them invisibly, and ideally when data is needed it will be in RAM. There'll be more about this on Wikipedia.

It's to do with how the things are detected. The only way to detect a particle is to cause it to interact with something else. So, if an electron is going through a slit, you can fire a photon at it to see if it's there. This act of measurement causes the "collapse" of the wavefunction that describes the electron. It's no longer a wave, it's a localised particle.

Special and general relativity are entirely consistent, it's quantum mechanics and general relativity that have issues.

In what way is it "stupid"? It's actually rather a neat idea at its core (particles behave like 1D strings trying to minimise the area of their worldsheets, which reflects the Principle of Least Action nicely), but sadly all sorts of things need to be added to make String Theory more consistent with our Universe. It also makes a whole bunch of predictions that are a bit... dodgy. Some very nice symmetries though.

On my screen the image appears as 500 pixels by 463 pixels. Unless you are somehow seeing a larger-resolution image than I am, it will also be that size. If we assume that your pixels are spaced at 100/inch, as are mine, the image will appear to be 5 inches by 4.63 inches. Funnily the image is about that size on my monitor.

According to that video is the problem. There is a theory, like a framework, called String Theory. It purports that in some way the Universe has more spatial dimensions than we can easily observe. Some formulations say ten, others eleven, and there is one that says twenty-six, though only if you are rotating to the right.

For instance, finite bodies, essentially anything of normal human size on Earth, live in a six-dimensional space. If you have two such objects, you can describe them in a twelve-dimensional space. Mathematicians also frequently consider objects in systems with many spatial degrees, it makes life interesting.

As another example, consider a quantum system where the end observation can be one of six different events. You can model that system with a six-dimensional vector, assigning probabilities to the different outcomes. If you then take this to any "normal" size, the end options are basically infinite, so you have an infinite-dimensional vector. This is also known as your run-of-the-mill function.

Sprinkles, you have to accept that as far as Rockbomb's concerned the more random internetters have access to his server the worse security is. And I agree - he's invested quite a lot of time and money into it, so not giving that access is not only entirely reasonable but is probably sensible.

For instance, my flatmate has a big PC that can play quite a few recent games, and my other flatmates often ask if they can play Empire: Total War on it for instance. It'd be easier if they knew his password so they could play any time without the other guy being there, OTOH he doesn't want them to know his password. See?

You can tell with anything less than 128 kb/s MP3s, I reckon. The cymbals start going tinny then it goes downhill from there.

There are some songs on my iPod (encoded in AAC) that I think I can almost hear something on, if I listen closely, but it as to be in my headphones because my actual speakers are now more of a source of noise.

Of course, there are also the songs that have this weird fuzzy noise on them in some places that I can't find any information about and can't fix. It's odd.

I imagine the forumses don't know that you haven't seen all the posts because the function that checks that is only called at a certain point, or at certain times. For instance, I browse using the back buttons on my mouse, because it's easier. But sometimes the pages don't load properly, something something something. Also sometimes if you spend too long on the post screen the yellow squares disappear.

I was thinking about this in lectures this morning, so I will put the question to you guys: the Twins Paradox. As has been said, Special Relativity predicts that time intervals are lengthened for objects moving relative to an observer. So let's say one of a pair of twins jumps in a rocketship and flies away in one direction for 5 years at close to the speed of light. He then turns around and heads back to Earth for another five years, arrives, and there is rejoicing. But according to SR the twin should actually be older from the relatively stationary Earth! Is this right? Is there really this paradox?

It's quite easy to construct a universe which is finite but boundless (i.e. has no edge).

And yes, Superjer is correct: in essence, muons should not reach the surface of the Earth because they have a half-life of 2.2 microseconds, even at the speeds they travel at that's too short a time to reach the surface without decaying.

On the other hand we detect lots and lots of muons. So basically they're travelling quickly, their "internal clock" runs slowly and they reach the Earth. You can also measure the differences in muon counts at the bottom and top of a hill, for instance.

Let's go with "appear". Because as has been outlined from the stick's frame it is normal size. The thing to take away from this discussion is that things you might normally take as constant (lengths, speeds, that sort of thing) are not in fact constant. You should in fact rely on the speed of light in vacua to be constant, no matter your inertial frame.

That is also part of Special Relativity, the equivalence of matter and energy. The full equation involves momentum so it can describe massless particles too.

Special relativity is the theory that describes how bodies move at velocities close to light. It's weird, but one of its (experimentally verified) predictions is that lengths are contracted. Another is that clocks moving relative to you appear to run slowly, and there's a quick argument I can run through if you like :)

Ok SRAW, if you want to be like that, we could admit that there are no "theories" as such, since the definition of a Mathematical theory involves some sort of irrefutable proof based on some set of axioms. However, we can only produce hypotheses that agree with experiment, that make predictions about our world. Either the theory predicts correctly and survives another day or it is wrong and needs to be modified. So far, Special Relativity has survived about 100 years, which isn't too bad.

Yes! Well, kind of. Observers moving relative to one another will in general disagree about the simultaneity of events. At speeds where relativity kicks in of course.

RB, NatureJay is talking about General Relativity. Basically, masses warp both space *and* time with the result that clocks in a stronger gravitational field (or accelerating strongly) appear to tick more slowly. Sounds a bit esoteric but this result is necessary to make GPS work!

Finally this is all thought-experiment, so we're assuming that the doors work properly for our purposes and that. I'm a physicist, not a masochist.

In fact, you could kind of do it in an actual experiment by knowing the velocity of the stick in advance, then synchronising clocks at each door. You then know where the stick will be and when it will be there and can set the doors to open and close at the correct times. That way the stick will definitely "see" the doors opening and closing at different times.

On a large scale, i.e. a person, I can't ever see it working. You need to have a massive crystal, or something, to store the data about them. Also while some of the data is transferred by entanglement some of it has to travel at traditional sub-light velocities. Bit of a shame, really. It appears that the universe has conspired to prevent FTL travel, though my favourite idea is the Alcubierre drive.
