Sooo I'm making a hot-sweet bocce ball drawing in illustrator for a hot-sweet corporate bocce ball team. I want a ball with two large stripes. The problem I have is with one of the stripes not lining up neatly with the edge of the ball - I want to use the outside sphere to limit the stroke of the interior line, if you're picking up what I'm putting down. See the bottom stripe below:
I can do it with many smaller lines that 'look like' one big stripe, but when I tried it I had to readjust the smaller lines every time I scaled the image. I've also tried adding an anchor at either end so that I could curve just the endpoint such that it lines up with the edge of the sphere, but it's always noticeable/it looks like crap.
Any thoughts? Thanks!

I figured out what I wanted to do using the 3D Revolve effect, basically mapping straight lines to a sphere, which I didn't know Illy could do...GG Adobe.
The technique I used was adapted from the follorrrringggg: http://vforvectors.com/create-a-colorful-christmas-ball/
EDIT apparently this solution has the same problem as the 'many small lines' technique did - it doesn't scale cleanly. BUMMER!

You could have a top-level blank bit that has a hole, i.e. on top of the lines. Dunno if I'm saying this well. Like, basically have a rectangle, with a bit cut out.

You mean like a sort of manual masking? Thus far it's been no big deal to remap my stripes when I scale, that (the mapped symbol itself) is the only it that's not properly scaling, it actually keeps it the same size and remaps it onto the bigger/smaller sphere, quite a pain. Maybe there is some 'scale mapped symbol with revolved object' check-box that I've missed...

Yes like mask :-) it would scale nicely too, no?
Oh, that's not really your problem any more...

I think you would be better using a filled region rather than strokes for the stripes.

I think you're right, SJ. I went with a different design anyways, but I certainly learned some useful stuff here. Thanks!

I had similar problems here, whenever I scaled the stripes got janked and I had to manually fix them. Every scaling here was with the shift modifier. I tried adding the alt modifier as well but no dice. All of this could have been avoided if I had the right specs to begin with in the first place, but I didn't find out until after several drafts that the design was to be applied to t-shirts on adhesive vinyl. A machine cuts a vinyl positive and then somebody has to go in with an x-acto and pick out all of the whitespace bits, and then the vinyl applies to the t-shirt like a sticker. My clients would have absolutely cooked in the original design, quite a bit of vinyl on your back on a hot day...then again it's the PNW so it will probably rain the day of the tournament anyways.
Thanks for the help, guys.

I don't know, this restaurant seems to be located there:
...and that's the bottom line because Mate de Vita said so.
