I don't know why, but for some reason I think that the only BOC song you have is astronomy.

And you should check out the awesome metallica cover of it!

Just switched to Winamp. Its dark, there are llamas, and it plays FLAC... I think I just fell in love.

Edit: The interface is kinda shitty though, but I'll just deal with it.

Mello maybe doesn't like HUGE FILES AND A LACK OF COMPATIBILITY?

Well yes, but lack of compatibility is hardly the format's fault. And the huge files are a side-effect of having lossless compression and are essentially what the format was designed to have. Of course, it's entirely fair to have an issue with that.

I have no strong feelings about audio encoding either way, but I think it is a silly thing to get in a debate about.

If there were no debates about it, we could end up with a situation where there are no decent encoders, because no-one was weighing up the relative merits of any of them. I contend your point that it is silly to debate about!

Fine.

The difference in listening to FLAC versus MP3 or ACC or many other encoding systems on regular speakers/headphones is a very minimal trade from the size of the file. Unless you have studio speakers or very nice headphones, FLAC is only better in your mind.

Well, I guess it depends on each individual speaker. My vaio speakers (came with an old desktop of mine) will start sounding distorted at about half volume with mp3s, where as with flac I can easily go 3/4 volume with no distortion (and I've never gone further than that, as I don't want to blow my speakers).

Also I've got a bose surround sound system that I'll use when I really wanna jam out, and I won't even play mp3's on there cuz of the difference in quality.

Well, I DO have really nice headphones and I STILL don't care much about file format of music. But that's mostly because the music I listen to is difficult to find and is impossible to find in multiple formats.

In general you shouldn't be able to hear the difference between a FLAC and a high bitrate MP3, but there are so many factors. The encoder, the exact song, and the player/equalizer/etc. can introduce or reveal distortion in an MP3 that's detectable even on OK speakers, sometimes.

You also have to have really good ears.

You can tell with anything less than 128 kb/s MP3s, I reckon. The cymbals start going tinny then it goes downhill from there.

There are some songs on my iPod (encoded in AAC) that I think I can almost hear something on, if I listen closely, but it as to be in my headphones because my actual speakers are now more of a source of noise.

Of course, there are also the songs that have this weird fuzzy noise on them in some places that I can't find any information about and can't fix. It's odd.
