Eh, I mean, by technical standards, Buddhism could be considered a cult, as its devotion is generally focused on the words of a single person instead of a group of persons or god.
There were other sort of disciples of Buddha who went on to have their own significance, Nagarjuna, Bodhisattva, Bodhiadharma, Mahakasyapa... but Buddha's the main man.
There are also some who integrate the Hindu cosmology into the whole thing, claiming that Buddha helped convince Indra and other traditional Indian dieties of their own eventual mortality (everything ends in Hindu mythology, even hell, it just takes a REALLY LONG TIME), allowing the two to be reconciled, but I don't think there are too many adherants of that in modern times.
And there were a couple of wacky wars and crusades held over who believed what, but they got over that pretty quickly.
