I tried plugging my flash drive into my flatmate's Vista PC yesterday at which point the machine crashed. Now the entire drive is corrupted! Yay! I had no really important files on there but I am very pissed off. I will admit to having repartitioned it just before switching but there were no errors in that. Ubuntu managed to read it fine. Hell that PC has read it fine when the drive was split in two! I am very annoyed. It's just like how the computers with Vista manage to lose the internet connection for no good reason and won't get it back until the hub is restarted while the XP and Linux machines carry on fine. ARGH.
You should see the output from ls -a, it's hilarious.
Any ideas on how I can fix this or at least attempt to recover my files?

Fun fact: I never saw a Vista PC in my life. From what I hear, that's a good thing.

So, at some point after I had my laptop built, Dell decided it was a Bad Idea to switch to an entirely Vista-based system and went back and offered people XP again.

The US government has a few extremely expensive pieces of machinery that can remove and restore badly corrupted data from damaged media... if you become the director of the CIA or something you might be able to get away with using it for personal reasons. Work on that, would you?

Why don't you just show us? There's this thing called copy/paste...
And if I were you, I'd dd the jumpdrive to a file just to backup whatever is on it. Then worry about trying to restore files.
This is a bit wordy but might help you.

Way ahead of them. Ah, I kid.
Since you're interested, here is something of an excerpt from ls -a.
EDIT: I tried, but the forum doesn't like the characters. They're mainly Unicode, I think. I might post screenshots later.
Thanks for the link, by the way. I'll have a look and see if I can go fix.

Windows Vista is mainly for office work by the way or you can say a bad attempt to copy the iMac. Vista has good security but not meant to play games with. Sometimes you have to just go with it if you have it like I do. What a drag

Partially because Microsoft Office is very widespread as is Windows. Office will run on most Windows systems - for example, Windows XP, which is still more prevalent than Vista AFAIK. As a side note, MS Office is shit. They push an "open" standard which even they themselves do not adhere to. Use OpenOffice.org, version 3.0 is pretty damn awesome.

go to system32 folder in windows and try to delete the wgtray.dll and exe files
it will give an error, so open up task manager and end wgtray process, then delete the files fast b4 it comes back, then no need cd key!

There were the early-uptake people who got it and were disappointed, then people started getting XP again because Vista was shit, now they don't offer XP any more.

Yes it does. The only people using Vista are the people who are too stupid to realize how much it sucks or are stuck with it.

One day I was prepared to say that. I almost managed then it pulled a BSOD on me which left me cursing for half an hour. Also, do you know my home PC managed to ignore the keyboard and mouse because they'd been plugged into different USB ports? I mean, bloody hell.

My main beef with Vista is that you have to know how to use a computer in order to use it and it constantly presumes that you do not know how to use a computer.
"Are you sure you want to launch this executable you just double clicked on? It could be dangerous. What about changing your settings?"
"For your sake, I wish it was dangerous."
