Free Choice as in to define what you want to happen. To define the future, if you will.

The common definition.

For anyone who didn't get me the first time

It doesnt exist, because predefined things that have happened since the beginning have created causes and effects untill now.

Things have influenced your thinking, which means that what you will do is predetermined.

Example. The thought "I am going to post on what I think about free choice" has been predefined by an occurrence which has happened due to an occurrance and so on and so forth until the beginning. And trying to stop that is predetermined too, because something CAUSED you to think about changing that. You are guided by what has already happened.

In essense, you could say that EVERYTHING is predefined, meaning a set timeline for our universe, making it linear.

The future has been determined since the beginning.
If you jump high enough you'll hurt your ankles when you land.

To look at it another way,

Everything that will happen tomorrow is going to happen in one certain way. We don't know it yet and there may be no way to predict it.

But tomorrow can only occur one way. The way it's being GOING TO occur since a thousand years ago, since forever ago. As we experience it tomorrow, that's the way it was going to be all along.

Same thing for today. Think of something that you decided today. Got it? Well that's been exactly what you were going to decide since ancient history...

Neat, huh?

There's only one future: the future that's going to actually happen...

Kinda depressing if you think about it.

Nah! The illusion of free will is the best you can get. So we've got the BEST YOU CAN GET!

That's great news!

You can't be depressed that you don't have something which isn't even definable!! It's like being depressed that you don't have ikfrastibnoppet.

It would only be depressing if you could somehow predict the future AND couldn't change it anyway.

Also, think of it this way: It could be predefined that your life will be EXTREMELY fun and full of joy with no bad occurences EVER and there is nothing anyone could do to change it.

Thanks to Mr. Heisenberg uncertainty principle, it's not possible to predict the future, nor is it possible to know every detail of any point in the present or past.

Thanks to this, we cannot know our fate and are free to perceive our life as being full of choice.

Or, to put it another way, what aaronjer said.

So the question is: Can we really change the future?
If you jump high enough you'll hurt your ankles when you land.
