Something somewhere earlier failed which meant that the portal (prt) file was not created which means that hlvis flakes out. If you open up the file fully and post its contents here then we'll give you a hand.

Post your compile log. It's a .txt-file with same name as your map; if I'm not mistaken.

You seem to have forgotten making some walls on the sides there, try making the map as an enclosed box. As it is now your map leads out to the void, which it should not.

An ORIGIN brush is a regular brush that has the ORIGIN texure applied to it. You can find the ORIGIN texture in ZHLT.wad.

On to the ladder... LADDER!
If you're still having trouble, ask.

zhtl.wad

zhtl.wad has all the functional textures :
origin , aaatrigger , clip , sky , ...

just be sure to follow the tutorial that Edan already posted exactly

the things there like "rendermode" and stuff like that , are in the entities properties

( to open properties select brush and press alt+enter , and to make a block an entity select it and press Ctrl+T )
Wtf is that ? its a bird ! no its a plane ! amm maybe its a plastic bag . NO ! its SUPERJER ! the greatest super hero ever!

how to use zhtl.wad :

zhtl.wad is a wadfile , wads are collections of textures , textures are pictures that you put on a block .

now all you have to do is :

1) download it from the link specified ( like somewhere you can find it )
2) Run valve hammer editor
3) go to tools -> options -> textures -> ADD WAD button ,
4) select zhtl.wad
5) click apply & ok

6) look at your pretty , new textures !
you can select witch wad you want to use from the " texture group " dropdown window in the upper right corner
Wtf is that ? its a bird ! no its a plane ! amm maybe its a plastic bag . NO ! its SUPERJER ! the greatest super hero ever!

I'd suggest following the tutorial on this site. Click the skull which will take you to the main page then take the red pill.

Nah, just click the "CS mapping" link.

2.How do you set a background?
3.How do you make water?

Easy Measy!

1. Create a brush that you want to make breakable, select it and press ctrl+T. A window should appear with a drop-down list of things you can turn this brush into; one of then "func_breakable"-- select that.
You can set many things in the func_breakable's properties. To open the properties, select your func_breakable, and hold alt+Enter.

2. Background for what?

3. Making water is just like making a breakable object, but instead of selecting "func_breakable", choose "func_water". Simple, eh?

1. Select the part you want to be breakable, press Ctrl+T and choose func_breakable.
2. If you're talking about the sky then go to: Map-->Map properties-->environment map
3. Create a block, select it and press Ctrl+T, select func_water.
