so this happens every once in a while, for no reason the sound will suddenly start playing out through my laptop speakers and not my headphones, and if I press on the sound icon it will show 2 sliders and 2 icons, one for the laptop and one for headphones. Adjusting the headphones one does nothing it seems.

so any idea why this happens

It sounds like your default sound device is getting changed.

Most laptops I think have some sort of hardware detection when you plug in another audio device, to switch off the speakers. This may be faulty in yours.
