Newton originally called the Earth's gravitational constant 10 for simplicity. It turned out that due to inaccuracies in measuring such things the real value (as made to fit with the definitions of a second and a metre) was more like 9.81. Had Newton said that the gravitational constant should have been 1 then we would now be calling it .981. Or something. So really, coincidence methinks.
