So I wanna make my own site, which will basically consist of a few different forum sections. I obtained a copy of IP.Board to make the forum structure and whatnot, but I can't configure anything 'til its all up and running online... which brings me to my problem. I don't have the money to pay for a site to be hosted at the moment, but I got to wondering "Why do I have to pay for someone else to host my site? Can't I host it off my own computer?". Which is exactly my question, can I host the site myself, from my own computer? And how would I do that?
I also got to asking myself "Why do I have to pay for a domain name? Its not like that company owns any rights to that name."
So, is there a way of going about using a domain, without purchasing it from someone?

You have to purchase the domain name. ICANN (really the U.S. gov) owns all the domain names or at least is the authority on who owns what names.
You can run a website off your own computer as long as you have enough bandwidth, it is always on the Internet, and your ISP is ok with it.
You just need to install a HTTP server (like apache or IIS) and probably a database server (like mySQL or MS SQL Server). Google for help on this stuff. I'd need to write many pages to tell you how to do all this and the info is already out there.

Hmmm, I find it actually quite messed up that anybody can hold the rights to every domain out there, til' you buy it from them. I might have to make a stand againt that one
Anywho, if I gotta purchase the domain, I can purchase hosting with it as a package and pay just about the same. So it looks like I will just have to wait til I get some cash to dink around with.
Just outta curiosity, what did you use to set up these forums? Or did you script all the PHP yourself? I looked at a few, and IP.Board looked like it would be the best (of the few that I looked at). But I can't for the life of me figure out how to extract the images from the theme files they have, so I can customize them and make my own theme.

I disagree. If someone didn't restrict who could and could not make websites we would have an enormous quantity of useless junk. For example, search engines would be overloaded with information [relative or not], advertisements would exceed ridiculous amounts, load times would be increased, and such forth. Moreover, you can be misdirected to useless sites. More sites would be 'bad' containing malware and scareware etc. And you can expect, in general, that 'bad things' and 'bad' websites will proliferate and multiply like nuclear arms.
Now, should the government -or whom ever- be able to charge for domains? Yes, if they are 'doing' those things to keep use 'safe' then they shouldn't go without reward.
However, does the government actually 'protect' us or make us 'safer,' because of that? That's purely of opinion.

That actually is a pretty valid point, I didn't even think of that aspect of it. I guess now that I look at it after what you said, it really would be chaotic and utterly ridiculous if you could just go grab some random domain whenever you want. But it would be nice if you could buy it, then own it forever, rather than having to pay for it every month or year.

Totally agree, I also think people should have to at least have an average iq to host a site. That would cut down on a lot of unnecessary sites.

Also so we can all have these pretty colors!
ICANN/U.S.gov only really "owns" all the domains because everyone agrees to accept that.
I could start up my own domain registry and sell names, and you all could all get DNS records from me and totally bypass the official ICANN system. But that would be dumb: it would fracture the Internet into 2 Internets and make everything worse.

I still prefer website builders since it is too complicated for me to build a website on my own. Anyways, Continue your conversations.
