Hmmm, I was thinking about making/building my own server (to host a website, forums, maybe CS 1.6). But I don't want to spend the extra money to make it more powerful than if needs to be.
I am pretty sure an i3 is more than enough, but would a core 2 duo be enough.

IBM wants 2,500 for a server, way too much. I figured a desktop/tower server would be enough (and cheaper). Is that what you have?

More importantly, how is your old server doing? specs? I may buy it off you, that is if you're not using it.

My old server isn't really a server. I was hosting at my house before so it's just one of my desktops.

The new server is a real 1U server I got for $300 used. It's about 1/18th as powerful as the old one but it doesn't really matter because serving web pages is no big deal.

I just have a puny-ass celeron and it does fine.

It really depends on what you are going to do on it. Just a webserver?

Oh ya, heh.

You really don't need anything more than I have to run a webserver and CS1.6. Basically any server you can buy will be able to do that. As long as it's from about 2003 or later I wouldn't even begin to worry about it.

Like Superer said, a few hundred dollars. Cheap motherboard, case, the processor will be dirt cheap, a bit of ram... you can get 2 gigs of fast enough RAM for $40 ish. Which would be more than enough.

Are those supposed to be servers? Or just desktop PCs?
