No, the original version from the album of the same name had all those weird synth effects and Bowie sounding desperate at times. Not that much guitar.
I actually heard The Wallflowers' version of it long before I ever heard Bowie's, so the lyrics sound rearranged and out of place to me. The Wallflowers weren't that bad at times, but not particularly innovative and had a hard time following the singer's father. They were tolerable pop for a time.
