I assume you mean you want to put this big box around your whole map...

well...

NO.

Don't do that. It won't FIX the leak but it will hide it from HLBSP. Hiding it does not make the problem go away. In fact, it makes it worse. It will make your map slower to compile AND play, it will increase the size of your BSP by 2,3,4 or more times, and it will cause you to run into engine limits much faster.

Bad.

Yes you can do that.

The reason why I have you do it brush-by-brush in the tutorial is because it also teaches you how to make ANY-shaped rooms. With Hollow you can only make rectangular rooms. And then how do you make a doorway, etc.?

Hollow is also VERY BAD when you try to use it on an irregular shape. Hollow saves a little bit of building time but it does not allow you to do anything new, so I don't consider it very important.

When you get good at manipulating brushes, you can make all the rooms/areas for your whole map in just a couple minutes without any Hollowing. Plus you are more likely to make more interesting shapes for areas without hollow.
