Is it possible to run certain Windows-programs on Linux? Or can you only use Linux specified software there?

There is a software package known as "Wine" that allows certain Windows executables to be run in a Linux environment. For instance I can play Diablo II on my Linux install but not Diablo I (it used to work but broke some time ago). Steam works, as do all Source-based games; the best thing to do would be to check the Wine Application Database for a list of programs and to what extent they work.

Or if you're lame & lazy you can pay for Cedega, most especially if you just want to play games. Stick with WINE, though.

Can you play it online as well?
...and that's the bottom line because Mate de Vita said so.

How the hell do you install diablo II LoD with wine? I go under Applications->Wine->Configure Wine->Add application->setup.exe (from the install disk) and OK and with that I do amazingly well in doing nothing at all.
...and that's the bottom line because Mate de Vita said so.

Hmmm. As far as I remember Diablo II autoran when I inserted the disk, though I could be telling lies. I've not tried installing the expansion though I have patched it successfully. You could try double clicking on the D II disc. If it autoruns, yay! If not, it should open an explorer window; look for a setup.exe in there or an autorun.exe. What distribution are you using?

Ubuntu 9.04

And if I try to run setup.exe, I get this error:
Quote:
[/media/cdrom1/setup.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
note: /media/cdrom1/setup.exe may be a plain executable, not an archive
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/cdrom1/setup.exe or
/media/cdrom1/setup.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/cdrom1/setup.exe.ZIP, period.

EDIT: Oh, apparently I was trying to open it with an archive manager. I think it's going to work now.

EDIT2: Yup, works fine, now just have to patch it to 1.11b and try out the PlugY mod.

EDIT3: Yes, everything works like a charm.
...and that's the bottom line because Mate de Vita said so.
