Someone sent a letter into PC Gamer (UK version) shortly after the release of HL. It went along the lines of this:

"Hi PC Gamer, I recently bought Half-Life but I have got stuck quite early on. Whenever I place the sample into the anti-mass spectrometer there is a resonance cascade, destroying the facility. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks."

I thought that was genius.
