Possibly because it is not possible to Inspire a nonexistent quality, but I think it's only like 50 Action points to add Competence.
Other than that do the usual, check your pronunciation and material component guide, and switch keys when you play the accompaniment tune.

I've been thinking about getting a new lute, or maybe a different instrument. I know that the lute is standard, almost required even for barding... but... I feel constrained in ANY situation without an accordion.
