So in malaysia even if you did not have satellite tv, you could press on the CH+ CH- buttons and go to channel 1,2,3 etc...
And for the the satellite tv, you had a dish at your house and you had this decoder that you would connect to the 3 colored thingies on your tv then switch to AV and you can watch your stuff.

However we just went to a store and bought a 2nd hand sony tv for $30, and we can turn it on and there is AV1 and AV2 and STEREO as the channels. However when we press CH+ or CH- buttons, it will make the screen go black for a second then it will just stay on the same channel. What I want to know is is this normal and does cable tv have a decoder, and we are using comcast.

Well, I think the problem you're probably having is that not too long ago the US passed a thing where every TV station was required to go digital. So, if it's an analog television, you have to buy a digital converter in order to be able to pick up the local stations.


But... you said you're using Comcast, so... I would assume that there should be some sort of box that you'd need to connect to your tv. I've never used Comcast (or any cable company at all, for that matter), I've always gone with a satellite company, and they always have had a box that we had to hook up.


Also, with cable, you won't be using the actual channels on the tv (those are for local stations), but rather you'd go to AV or component or something, and you'd control the channels via a separate remote that controls the cable box.

Well we went to the shop and they said that they most probably will give a box, so all is fine.

And also a testament to how dumb americans are:

We went to a restaurant an hour ago and there was this lady, and we said that we just came from malaysia 2 days ago. She said "Is that where the Taj Mahal is?"

And she is from the Philipines (which is right next to malaysia):facepalm:

Well Im assuming she is american-philipino, because no philipino can be THAT dumb, unless of course she lives in the US her whole life
