ok, so im using the steam version of cs....yippie right?

not sure if that matters, but i get to compiling and i get this error:

command line: hlvs map1
error: portal file 'map1.prt' does not exist cannot vis the map

any thoughts...im reallllllllly new at all this and its probably a dumb problem...right???

empty map? like minus entities? i have a light source and a spawn for ct and t's...is that what you mean?

You have to move the map closer to the center of the grid, "Edit" ---> "Select all" and move the whole map close to the center of the grid.

(During compilation some brushes are expanded slightly, if a brush is already close to the edge of the grid then these brushes will go outside the grid during the compile.)
