Anyway, how do I apply a texture to one side of a brush? it's driving me crazy!

Make a small plane-shaped brush and stick it in front of the other one.

On a side note, I hate Windows Automatic updates.

you could use that little box with one side covered green, and the other red.
then click on teh face of the brush you want and choose your texture, and click apply

Another way to do it is to bring up the Texture Application tool (Shift+A), choose a texture, with the Texture Application tool still up just right-click on a brush-face in the camera-view.
