With GIFs you can define one colour to be transparent. Thusly the pixel can be either transparent or not; PNGs support multiple-level transparency so you can have gradients and the like.

You can make a transparent gif. To do so you set it so that one color (lets say true blue just as an example) will be rendered transparent. Then when your making the image, any pixel you want to be transparent you will make true blue.

.png's do transparency differently, and allow you to make things semi-opaque.
