I seen in a few tutorial videos that when they are dragging a brush to the size they want it it shows the distance above it how do i do that.

That's Hammer 4 (for Source-mapping).

You also see the size in Hammer 3.4/3.5, look at the bottom border of Hammer when you create a brush, may say eg:"128w 128l 128h". (width, length, height)
